In the world of dance Garth Fagan was known as a “true original”. Fagan was jamacian-born in the 1940′s and was born to dance. During his life he studied with Ivy Baxter and left Jamaica to join her company. When he got to detroit he attended Wayne State University and he gratuated in 1968. Just two years later he founded his own dance company, he founded it in Rochest NY, and was called Garth Fagan Dance. While at his company he made sure that anually there was a new dance that came out in his signature style. He came up with his style through other unique dances that he learned over the years, such styles were derived from caribean, and african dances, this gave more energy and feeling to the stage! He worked as an artistic director for many different companies. He’s the director, founder, and president of Garth Fagan Dance Company. . Garth started out with doing gymnastics then fell in love with dancing. Dancing was his passion and he continued to do it even though his father disagreed with dance as a career. Fagan danced with Ivy Baxter and the Jamaican National Dance Company. In 1960 Garth moved to the US. When he moved he attended Wayne State University in Detroit, majoring in psychology. He opened the company in 1970 in Rochester, New York. The company is still standing at this day for 40 years.

This dance company was originally called the “Bottom of the Bucket BUT… Dance Theatre”. Garth’s choreography includes a little bit of everything… modern dance, ballet, social dance, etc. One of his most famous pieces and most commonly known piece was the choreography for The Lion King, which won the Tony Award for best choreography in 1998. He’s won many other awards, and choreographed many other pieces and till this day, Fagan’s dance lives on.
