Humorous Study

After a short summary, (briefly) present the intention of the dance.

The student must then critically discuss:

  • the basic ideas and images that motivated the dance
  • the compositional craft used, referring to basic dance elements (space, time and dynamics)
  • any compositional issues or compositional problems that arose in the process, and how these were, or were not, resolved
  • the most successful aspects and
  • if the dance work were to be presented again, the possible changes to be made, and why.

  1. For the humorous study, we were required to choreograph a dance and make it funny while implimenting the skills we learned from the previous prop study. I think that this was a challenging assignment, and the hardest part was having to figure out a funny or good concept for it. I think that compared to my humorous study last year, this one was much better because last year my dance was just cute and simple, where as this time i had a specific idea and a plan to actually make it funny. If I could do this assignment again I think that I would really increase my enegery and may everything more dynamic.

The Humor study, which I anticipated the most, was a comp study based on the concept (the dancer’s concept) of humor. In this comp study I was able to show another side of me to my classmates and teacher, my flare for dramatics.
Motivational factors in making this dance were the song “Kiss” by Prince and the idea of being sassy. Although this has been a challenge for me, I tried not to let the music dictate my movements but compliment them. In this piece I wanted to do something that was different what I had usually been doing, an upbeat sort of dance. This idea made my movements sharper as far as dynamics.
Although the idea was there, there were some compositional issues. The main thought or concept I and the hardest time with, was making sure it was funny but not too cheesy. The song seemed to have called for pelvic thrusting so I also tried to not be to “racy”, although it was a challenge. The idea of not making the piece “racy” was accomplished but I wished I would put more emphasis on the humorous parts.
The most successful aspect was showing my peers as well as my teacher that I do have a personality and that I not just the quiet girl. I also feel that I accomplish the idea of showing sass. If the piece were to be re-presented I would definitely be more dramatic to get the point across, use a variation of movements as work more with levels.

This comp study was all about humor. This humorous study was supposed to be funny; however it also has to include technique and aspects such as getting the concept to be conveyed correctly to your audience. My motivation for the compostion of this dance was Michael Jackson and his music. The basic idea of this study just came to me really out of nowhere. However, actually coming up with choreography was difficult. I wanted to use space and dynamics, but also I did not know what to do that my peers would find humorous. Some moves I thought was funny to me might not have been to them, but more importantly Mrs. Penuel. But, while coming up with the choreography I continued to just flow with it. One thing that I believe helped with my study was my inspiration and also the props and theatrical effects I put in it. The most successful aspect of my comp study was probably actually getting people to laugh and being successful in that. If I were to present this comp study again I would put more choreography instead of the walks that I did. I think that it would add texture and more of that spice that needs included with a piece.

  4. The Humorous Study was the title for the composition study that we just completed. The basic idea of the study was to basically “be funny”. The dance was supposed to enlighten the audience and entertain them. I decided that story could be easier to make funny and easy for my audience to understand. I used a setting, a time, a theme, and characters to create the overall funny story. My setting was a room with a chair and the main characters boyfriends items scattered all over. She’s reading the paper when she realizes he’s been gone for a long time and hasn’t come home so she starts to pack up his things and kick him out.
Issues that I came across while creating the comp study were that i over thought a lot of it wondering if it would be funny or not. I guess it was funny and amused my audience. My most successful aspect would be that i was able to translate my story well and my audience was able to understand it. If i could change anything i would have tried to make the concept more dramatized.

Our fourth comp study was humorous, and we were required to use ideas and concepts to create a piece that will communicate to our audience a funny message. While creating, it was important that we keep in mind the fact that what may be funny to us as the creators, may not transfer as funny to those who watch. My original plan was to use a hula hoop and a balloon as props, but I wasn’t really able to find a good story line that would work. This is when i decided to a blanket (cape) and still keep the idea of the hula hoop (opponent); as soon as this concept fit into place the song “Eye of the Tiger” immediately popped into my head as a perfect fit to the piece. What made this study easier that the first, was the ability to expand and use anything that would help to enhance the theme; basically not limits.
While watching my comp study, i feel that it was funny, probably not hilarious, but i did get an appropriate response from my audience. I feel that i should have established more of a character rather than just going through the motions of just using a blanket and hula hoop. Overall, i d believe that I’ve made a great improvement from last year’s humorous study because i actually got laughs instead of just smiles. As always, there is still room for improvement look forward to ideas that i can apply to future studies.

For this comp study, we had to choreograph a humorous piece. I had never really seen a dance that was funny before and i wondering how i was going to do this or go in the right direction. This was by far the hardest piece to come up with, but once i got started all of my ideas came pouring out. I figured since it’s a humorous piece, why not do what the lyrics say. This was my first time choreographing a funny piece, so i didn’t want to make it stupid funny. The “rough draft” of my piece was somewhat stupid funny so i changed it up a little. I thought my final product was pretty good for my first time. There was one part when the singer said something about a key so i held up my hand like i was holding a key. I think that was one of my strongest points next to when i made the funny face when he said “i saw the fear in my enemies eyes”. If i were to present this again i would make it longer and tell more of a story.

This Comp Study had to deal with humor. I think that it was a challange at the begining but I got the jist of it and it worked out for me in the end for me I think that this comp study worked out for me in the end. I think that the viewers liked it and i thought that it was cute but I lost focus at the end but it worked for me I believe and I think that I cold add more dance moves to it.

  8. This time in my Humorus Comp Study I found that once again that it was pretty hard. I set up the dance and how I wanted to perform the piece. There were certain problems that I faced for instance spacing. I didnt have a theme at all this year and I think that was another problem in why it was so difficult to make up this picece. I feEL that I was successful with my facial expressions. When I did my turns they were pretty funny because i had, had my butt out, the turn just looked very sloppy. I entertained the class with my dance so I was happy about that. I would like to have thought a little harder about the piece. Next time I am going to write down all of my thoughts when making up my dance. I think that my dance will come out alot more efficient if i chose to do that.

Just like last year, we were faced with a challenge of making a choreography that would be funny but not too literal. Taking from what I did last year I was making up moves that fit with the song “Hound Dod” by Elvis Priestly. I thought it was well developed and I had achieved the requirements for this dance. As of before, I asked my mother for her opinion. She viewed the dance and said that even though it was pretty good it wasn’t far of from what I have done in the past. She strongly agreed on that in order for me to progress I needed to go out of the box. Once again I was faced with a challenge of making a dance with in 2 days and making it look good, all that afternoon I was thinking of my theme and the song I was gonna use. The song came first which I heard earlier that day. It was “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. It was a fun song and it was very out of my ganra. Next I thought of ballet dancer and it hit. I was going to then to become a ballet dance and in a sense make fun of it. From there on it was easy to combine modern with the ideal moves that people think of when they say ballet. On the day of the performance I had learned that Naomi had a skirt and she was willing to give it to me. Also with the help of Mrs.Penual I was able to acquire a leotard. Next thing I knew i was behind the door and I heard my song play and all I could do is dance. Many were walking by at that time but I coudnt dare to stop. I no longer cared of what anybody thought of me and I just went with it. I am glad that my classmates enjoyed my performance and it sure will be stuck in my mind.

The composition study that we had to do what a humorous study; meaning that it had to be about making a piece funny and for it to make since of the funny story you were to tell. So as for me my humorous study was okay. The parts that motivated the dance was when I was throwing off my wig and staring ridiculously at the audience I would say. The craft that I used in the dance was fair such as my space was overall good, I used alot of space turning and going in different direction throughout the dance. The time I used was not so good but it was okay, I was on count. There were not any dynamics what so ever that I did. But overall the humorous study was fair but it could have been better .The issuses that I faced were , trying to make the choreograohy funny and interesting to the audience. Then trying to make the choreography make since to what i was trying to make funny. Also picking a reasonable funny sing that would catch the audience. If i could completely restart this entire composition study, who first figure out what would i make funny, and what am going to use to make the dance interesting and stay continuously funny. Also how could my audience understand what i was making fun of as well. Lastly, how would I put all this together step by step and make it turn to be a humorous piece.
